What NotebookLM Can’t Do — And How to Work Around It

Knowing the edges makes you better at the middle. Every tool has limits. Being upfront about NotebookLM’s constraints makes you a smarter user and a more credible teacher.

Hard Limits

It only knows what you give it

NotebookLM cannot browse the internet, access current news, or retrieve information beyond your uploaded sources. Ask it something that isn’t in your docs and it will tell you it can’t answer.
💡 Workaround: Use Gemini Deep Research or Perplexity first to gather web intel, then paste the results as a source.

50 sources per notebook

Each notebook supports up to 50 sources. This sounds like a lot — and usually is — but large research projects can hit this ceiling.
💡 Workaround: Split into multiple notebooks by topic or phase. Use a Google Doc as a “meta-index” that links between notebooks.

No control over the RAG pipeline

You can’t customize how NotebookLM retrieves information from your sources. It decides which passages are most relevant to your query.
💡 Workaround: Be more specific in your questions. The more precise your query, the more targeted the retrieval.

Static website captures

When you paste a URL, NotebookLM captures the page at that moment. It doesn’t stay live.
💡 Workaround: Use Google Docs as sources for any content that updates regularly. They auto-sync.

Things It’s Not Great At

Creative brainstorming from scratch

NotebookLM is grounded in your sources — which means it’s not a great tool for open-ended creative generation when you have no sources to constrain it. ChatGPT or Claude are better for that. Use NotebookLM when you want ideas from your material. Use an LLM when you want ideas from anywhere.

Very long documents without structure

A 500-page unformatted PDF with no headers or sections is harder for NotebookLM to work with than a 50-page well-structured report. Add a structured context doc or one-page summary alongside dense sources to help it orient.

Math and complex calculations

NotebookLM reads and synthesizes text. It’s not a calculator. Use it to understand the methodology, then do the math elsewhere.

Real-time data

Stock prices, live sports scores, breaking news — none of it. NotebookLM is a static knowledge system built from what you uploaded.

Guaranteed accuracy

NotebookLM is significantly more accurate than general-purpose LLMs because it’s grounded in your sources — but it can still misread, misattribute, or make errors. Always click citations. If something feels off, verify directly in the source.
🔑 The Accuracy Rule Click every citation that matters. NotebookLM shows you exactly where its answers come from. That’s your fact-check built in. If you’re making a decision or sharing something publicly, verify the citation in the original source before you act on it.

Quick Gotcha Reference

Gotcha What Happens Fix
Uploaded a PDF but answers are vague PDF may be scanned/image-based without real text Use OCR software first, then re-upload
YouTube video won’t load as source Video may lack captions/transcript Find a version with captions or upload a manual transcript
Google Doc not updating Source may not have re-synced Remove and re-add the source
Chat seems to ignore some sources Too many sources active, or question is too broad Toggle to fewer sources, ask more specific questions
Audio Overview sounds wrong Sources may be contradictory or confusingly structured Add a brief summary Google Doc to orient the AI
Citations look right but answer feels off NotebookLM excerpted out of context Click the citation and read the surrounding passage
